SÉBASTIEN GOURMELEN
Sébastien Gourmelen shapes space as one might walk through an inner landscape. With roots in urban sociology and anthropology, his early work was devoted to observing the city, gradually giving way to a more immersive approach—camera in hand, tracing the movement and imprints of bodies upon the land.
From Lille to Paris, from Brussels to Porto, and now close to Geneva, his path has taken him through art schools and universities—École Supérieure d’Art du Nord, Paris 8, Montpellier—enriching his practice with video, installation, performative walks, drawing, and photography. At the heart of his work lies a central question: emergence.
How do gesture, movement, and the body’s contact with place give rise to new spaces? Through his art, Sébastien probes the delicate moment where form, sensation, or presence appear. His research is focused on the beginnings—those uncertain zones where experience unfolds, where inside and outside meet.
Each work is an invitation to movement and to the sensitive exploration of space. Between appearance and disappearance, Sébastien’s creations offer to explore that intimate boundary between the self and the world, giving emergence to a vital place—the subtle force through which art, the body, and place encounter and reinvent each other.
